I just wrote an enormous post about Portland, and then accidentally deleted it.

But why do you need to know about Portland anyway? Let’s just pretend that this is a really long post about DIY ethic, bike lanes, and community. Isn’t it interesting that the thing that struck me most about Portland was how transportation defined community for me while I was there? Buses, light rails, and bike rallies. Is community actually enhanced by the fact that you are traveling from one place to another with another human being, even if you never speak to them? Maybe that’s part of the reason that the suburbs are emptying. Pure isolation with a luxury interior.

Three places not to miss if you go to Portland:

Also, try and make it to The Kennedy School, which is kind of touristy but intriguing for sure. Finally, hit up at least one Stumptown. Portlanders swear by it, and I’d give it a grade of “pretty good to decent” (if that’s the word order I want).

Have you ever been to Portland? What were your impressions?
